Summer league’s div2 got nuked and people wonder why. The rant returns…
Gummi (who apparently still can’t stop crying because babby can’t play with his favourite toy) recently created a stunning thread over on the ETF2L forums, prompting D2m to speak out on his feelings regarding the “AFS” season:
“festering shithole“
Not only does he seem to not be a fan of the season, he apparently knew this before it even started:
“It was ridiculously obvious by the polls on ETF2L and VanillaTF2 that a summer season would. not. work.“
So the question is, why did he let it go ahead, or more accurately; why did he let it go ahead in the format it did?
First let’s go over why AFS is a failure: the fact it’s a nothing league. That’s it. It’s not the summer, it’s not the holidays, it’s not the fuckin’ weather. It was a straight up failure during the decision making process of the ETF2L admins.
If they just started calling it Season 8 from the off, making sure it mattered, then things would have panned out a lot better. Sure, there are some teams that couldn’t take part, but who fuckin’ cares? They could jump right back in for some sweet Season 9 action. If these teams had players that wanted to take part in S8, they could just hop ship to a different team for 1 season, much like they have done anyway.
So what difference would it make? The people who DID enter would actually care, and more importantly there wouldn’t be all the shit talking (which frankly is totally over the top, the only abject failure was in Division 2) that has given the whole thing a sour taste.
I think there is only one REAL flaw with a summer season, and that is scheduling: It’s bad enough in the winter, it will always be worse in the summer. But again, who cares? Games are getting played in the end, my team is still motivated to win our games just like they would a “real” official, and I think those people who are taking part are having fun. Well, ignoring the little disagreement between Torden and his new best friend Coldfront.
So how is it that the head admin and unfortunately a “big deal” in the TF2 Europe scene shit talking it so much without apparently realising where the real problems were? Why is he acting like he’s some genius that “told you so”, and how will this shape the future of the competition? Why is he suddenly brushing over the fact that HE was the number 1 proponent behind Season8 starting so soon after Season7 in the first place?
Here’s a little quote:
Me: Don’t you worry that it’s going to run through exams/summer?
D2M: Most exams are finished by the start of June. Yes it is over the summer, but teams successfully completed season 5 over the summer of 2009. Additionally, I floated the idea of adding a ‘summer’ wildcard too, making 3 per season
Truly spoken like someone who already knew it would be a failure. Or maybe he’s just full of bullshit. I’m not sure.
“But no, we’ve had to run a fucking failure of a season to appease everyone that didn’t listen to us. Awesome huh?“
Well, ignoring him talking like a total prick for just a second, and looking at what he is saying – he has hit on SOME truth there, they probably had to do something. What I’m wondering is why he took the absolute worst option (season7.5) and then turns around at the end and acts like smug teacher. Here’s 3 ways they could have gone with ETF2L competitions for the summer, one of which I already covered in detail:
- Season 8
- AFS, but done right. Actually experiment with your so called “experimental” league.
- Fun shit
Those were the 3 obvious choices, yet we ended up at some horrible fourth option. The point of this article is to highlight that the other 3 choices are still valid and shouldn’t just be scrubbed from our future because “D2M said so”.
The truth is that most of the admin team is a decent bunch – RaCio being one of the standouts – and the majority of the teams are probably enjoying the season because they neither see nor hear all of the drama around AFS and none of them pay much attention to D2M’s posts. That said: what a miserable fucking failure the head admin (and HIS summer season) has been.

- # - nice! +0div2 teams are now folding just because the other teams are folding too. it’s ridiculous. they simply have no reason to commit and that’s why afs failed.
gj on finding a tasty contradiction ;D i’m sure d2m will find a way to explain it tho. must’ve been a bug in his keyboard or something

- # - nice! +1FEEL BAD FOR GUMMIBEAR((((((
And just lolol
- # - nice! +0Formal request from the community: Please do not badmouth D2M before i40. We don’t want him throwing another tantrum, like he did before i39, and refusing to go (as well as going out of his way to inconvenience his former teammates).
Many of us amongst the LAN-going community want a chance for a meet-and-greet with this friendly, mature, not-powermad and pleasant fellow :)
- # - nice! +3ok…. but tell me in your logical explanation, those teams that couldnt take part say powergaming… would have to start in div2 because they missed a season and the div1 spots are now taken?
- # - nice! +7Making it not an “official” season was the right thing to do imo.
agreed
- # - nice! +0AFS is good, it banned FAN
fail
- # - nice! +1+1 Sneis :D, though there only were 2 players I know using it :p
- # - nice! +7If you’re going to make a comment about i39, get it right. Also get some balls and don’t sit behind a pathetic nickname. You’re just making yourself look petty by doing that.
I didn’t go to i39 because I didn’t have a team to play with. Simple as that. Mainly because half of our team dropped out after promising for ages to go. So I took the option to move my i39 booking to i40, where I could actually play with people who were dedicated enough to spend some money on a ticket.
Idiotic comments with no factual basis are pathetic and just make you look ignorant. Cool bandwagon though!
Where ever Empathy go, “all the shit talking (which frankly is totally over the top..” follows.

Re: D2M’s angry retort:

- # - nice! +1All I currently see is whine, and some more whine and….. oh wait, what’s that more whine. Far easier to criticize than to manage, especially as one doesn’t get paid for the effort put in : – )
I’m glad the Summer Season went into place, got to see some flaws, which can be avoided from Season 8.
People whining about certain maps and weapons and so on, need to take it on the chin. I believe every league in whatever sport in this world had various testing methods, I could mention quite a few for you with regards to football and rugby if you wish. Alot of flack was taken given by the media to the board(s) across the two sports but hey ho they learnt alot of things that people mentioned that they wouldn’t do in the premier league or conference league and so on.
I also like how D2M is picked on with various decisions yet the majority if not all are a joint decision. Just because he speaks out and is head admin therefore he takes the beating. Yesterday we saw a fine example with Mr Braffle :D with everyone quick to point, yet when the 1on1 conversation with braffle was viewed ppl went silent.
Seems to me certain Swedes like more drama than Fat Americans off Jerry Springer shows.
Also if the TF2 community peasants who act like cock-ends continue like this, then I suggest you either f*** off and play Starcraft 2 or play the NEWLY and IMPROVED (which never makes sense) CSS. We don’t need plebians who act like the CSS scene in this community.
- # - nice! +6the tf2 scene is just as bad as the css scene and the fact that people pretend to be superior to it is a fucking joke, btw.
- # - nice! +5DJC has it.
- # - nice! +0It’s funny how nobody mentioned any of these specific problems before AFS started. <– Statement could be wrong, so please prove me otherwise.
D2M came across as a dick in his original post, but so are most of the people replying.
It's so damn easy to pick plans apart in hindsight. Even you peasant, pleb, retard knobbers should appreciate that. Live and learn.
- # - nice! +6I think it’s just because there is nothing interesting happening so people fill the gaps in with drama.
- # - nice! +0The first thing to say is I’m sorry.
We’re sorry for the massive disruption the AFS has caused your lives. There’s no one who wants this over more than I do. I would like my life back.

GRYSOR WAS RIGHT, D2M DESTROYED ETF2L AND D2M BANNED OR DELETED ANYONE WHO TRIED TO STOP HIM!!!!!
- # - nice! +0have u seen d2m’s facebook picture? he looks like benjamin linus
- # - nice! +2DONT TRUST D2M, HE IS A DIRTY LIAR, HE DELETES AND BANS EVERYONE WHO GOES AGAINST HIM
Yawn. Another poorly thought-out rant that tries to hide its lack of good content by hopping on the personal attack bandwagon. We get it, you don’t like D2M, good for you.
As for your 3 obvious choices, all of them have obvious flaws as well. A proper season starting would cause a massive clusterfuck in season9 of teams that won promotion in season7 and feel that they shouldn’t be punished because they couldn’t play over summer and teams that won a less competitive season8 wanting it to count. “Fun shit” would just draw ire from the substantial crowd of players that wanted a proper season and is also much easier to sprinkle into a more serious season (see: bball cup) and appease both.
As for AFS “done right”, easier said than done yeah? The only major mistake I’ve seen in this season was coldfront over viaduct but hopefully that’s lesson learned for when season8 comes around. Do you honestly think that a more “experimental” league is the way to make AFS less of a failure, by polarising the community and giving teams even more reason to drop which is why people are proclaiming it’s a failure in the first place?
Lets face it, the decision would’ve been easy if there was a clear majority regarding what people wanted; there was always going to be flaws in whatever was decided due to the pretty much 50/50 split in what people wanted. Just because AFS isn’t perfect doesn’t mean it wasn’t (more or less) the best decision and if you can’t try to get your point across coherently without resorting to petty personal insults then you really need to grow the fuck up.
- # - nice! +2Agree with Jones, link me to a detailed article, written before the season started, explaining how this league was ‘obviously’ going to fail and I’ll be quiet. But when you say about D2M acting like a ‘smug teacher’ because he is now saying he knew it was going to fail all along, what is this article doing? Pretty ironic really. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
- # - nice! +1I’ve always found it ridiculous that ppl who do nothing at all except sit on their thumbs all day long complain and whine about service that volunteer workers such as the ETF2L admins provide to them. This kind of nameless rant doesn’t have any credibility in my eyes. If you want a change, become an admin yourself and work to change things to the direction you want to.
Then of course, there are guys like Admirable and JimmyBreeze whose words carry some weight because they’ve contributed to the scene elsewhere. The bottom line is, don’t expect such rants to be taken seriously before you’ve actually done something worthwhile yourself.
Oh, and I’d say that TF2Street was somewhat an exception since his/their blog was a humorous and enjoyable read. This rant doesn’t fit to any aforementioned categories so the value of it is pretty much 0.
- # - nice! +6aw i love you too moose :3
- # - nice! +0Ad hominem much, Moose?
- # - nice! +0Jesus christ, stop making such a fucking fuss about petty insignificant stuff like this…

I dont`really know about power but we (rockit) didn’t play this season cos it was no real season
if it would have been season 8, we would have played it (maybe every match with a merc, like all the other teams are doing it now in afs), but as we knew we would get our div1 spot anyway the next real season, we didn’t take part as we knew we would have some problems
and power gaming was willing to play the ubercharge torunament (they just missed the reply deadline for one day ;), so i guess that they would have played if it was an “official” season
- # - nice! +0uppix.net/f/6/5/8ded6326b16ae4...
This is what made AFS a failure. People that register for a league, play 2 games at best, and drop out. If the rules sucked, if it was a useless season, then don’t sign up for it. There is nothing more to say really.
- # - nice! +0i like unicorn
- # - nice! +0as a player for one of the teams that folded in that picture peio, you have no idea what actually went on internally to make those teams fold
- # - nice! +0I don’t see what the problem with afs is. You did have the option not to join. And besides, why don’t you do something for the community if you don’t like what already exists.
