Hildreth —  Whilst the amateurs from 6v6 are in mid-season, the real “pros” in Highlander are just warming up with ETF2L hosting their first ever  pre-season experimental cup focused on testing different maps. We saw just over 40 teams fight it out in 3 skill brackets playing on pl_Barnblitz, cp_Foundry and cp_Upland, the latter being created by  Mark. The Lower bracket was won by new team  Gibs’R'Us whilst the Mid bracket was won by Division 4 side  GFM Highlander team which leaves us with the business of the final for the Highest bracket…

Who else would you expect to see in a Highlander final other than  SNSD, with superstar Heavy ALX, suspiciously-accurate Sniper  Tviq and TF2′s only sex symbol  TheSucker. Everything these guys have ever entered related to 9v9 has always been won by them, heck if they had a 9v9 tiddlywinks tournament they would probably still win it, they’re that good. It was no surprise after getting a bye in the first round, the ETF2L season 1 winners took out trick17 5-0 on Foundry before testing out cp_upland for the first time versus  Team Ilita and despite setting a 16 minute attacking time, SNSD held the B point on the Steel-like map to book their place in the final.

NOT SO FUN FACT #1 – TheSucker’s real name is ‘Something like Dilbert’ but actually Fredrick.

Who would you expect to join SNSD in the final? With  May Contain Nuts not participating it would be between  Colony and  Turbopoop eSports who would meet on cp_upland in the other semi-final (after Colony took down the promoted  Kiberzona Chior Tai on Foundry). Under the influence of inspirational caller and part time opera singer  Zoob, :E (get it?) managed to edge out the Russians and turn it into a rematch of the ETF2L Community Challenge final.

NOT SO FUN FACT #2 – Zoob used to play for Yoyotech, the 6v6 team that makes up most of SNSD.

VanillaTV have announced their intentions to cast the final this Sunday, sadly for myself I have to sit this one out due to seniority so join TF2′s true “quiet caster”  Byte along with Ireland’s answer to TheSucker, James  ‘Admirable’ McDonnell plus the ever reliable  Comedian (happy Shrove Tuesday bro). The maps for the evening have been set out already with a best of 3 map format; with teams given the option to play Barnblitz because both teams got a bye on that map, we will see Upland dropped in favour of the payload map. The first map will therefore be Barnblitz played best of 1 round and the second map will be Foundry, played first to 5 caps or the team with the most caps after 30 minutes (10 minute golden cap if necessary). The decider map if required will be ctf_turbine_pro with a timelimit of 20 minutes and a cap limit of 5 (golden cap round lasting for an unlimited amount of time).

NOT SO FUN FACT #3 – I once lost my voice casting a match…the cast was unaffected.

To add some extra incentive to the match, nine copies of DOTA 2 donated courtesy of gamersunited.net.au will be awarded to the winning team. SNSD being the overwhelming favourites mean we may well see Yoyotech skip pcws for Dota 2 in the near future…but Colony are no slouches and they might still pull off what would be a sensational win as underdogs in what is essentially ‘The Classic Highlander fixture’ between two old rivals. Tune in this Sunday 19th February at 20.00 CET – it is going to be…experimental!
