It’s Tuesday, and you all know what that means. ABC‘s police procedural rom-com Castle was on last night and should have already been enjoyed by thousands of pirates and
Nathan Fillion fangirls worldwide.
Funnily enough, there’s another ABC that’s actually slightly more relevant here. Yes indeed, our triumvir of erstwhile regulars is back, with
AcidRenix,
Beta and
Comedian reuniting to fight the corporate broadcast overlords and reclaim their position as the most popular ABC in the world.
The spectacle for this evening is brought to you courtesy of ETF2L Division 1, pitting the i45 bright-lights of
Elemental Violence against
uV Gaming. Or is that
uV Ninjas? Desperate for gossip, Pirate Radio presenter
CommanderX has infiltrated the Russki ranks, but is currently relegated to the back-up spot for the “enthusiastic supporter” slot. This evening we will hopefully be seeing full line-ups for both teams, which should give us close results. and has been drafted up to play in place of
forsak3n as he is unable to play, however this should still produce a close game.
elem.v’s medic
Ace has high hopes for the fixture as well, commenting:
I think it’s gonna be a great game, we love playing against uV.
According to Ace, elem.v have already been playing mindgames against uV by playing a practice match against them last night with a severely under-par substitute player:
We pcwed them yesterday and lost, but we had
TheSucker to merc as soldier.
With uV not having played an official since mid-September, it’s good to hear of them getting some keen practising in, and both teams are definitely raring for their first win of the season.
Our ABC combo will be bringing you the live action starting at 21:15 CEST tonight, so make sure you tune in! If you can’t wait that long, have fun rewatching The Green Beret for the next seven hours. I’ll be watching Castle.

- # - nice! +4look how many + my comment on you got. :D
- # - nice! +1CommanderX to drop 3 ubers.
- # - nice! +4Wait, isn’t Whiteglow playing medic for uv?
- # - nice! +1TheSucker managed 4 in the PCW.
- # - nice! +4Ace dropped 5 ubers in the PCW we just played.
- # - nice! +3We still lost.
- # - nice! +4I told you he’s improving!
- # - nice! +1Oh those mindgames!
- # - nice! +0With performances like this i’m going to be prem in no time
- # - nice! +5Just say war.
- # - nice! +3Also this alias rule sucks dick for viewers, and the players really don’t care (and in some cases even enjoy) the fact that the fakenick gets read out.
- # - nice! +2That’s not fair. I’d be really upset if they weren’t reading my name out all the time.
- # - nice! +0What sucks dick more for viewers, is calling that ‘Bob’ killed ‘Billy’, when the names Bob and Billy never show up on the scoreboard. Sure, at the start of a game, you can tell everyone who the fakenicks are, but then someone joins the stream mid way through the match, and it’s not like, we are going to keep on reminding them of both their fake nick, and real nick.
Imagine casting a game where you’re only using the player’s real life names, yet their in game names stay as their alias. The audience would start to get mixed up with who is who, the casters would also get confused at some points, unless you know the players really well.
It’s easier for the casters, and more beneficial for the stream viewers, to just read out the names on the screen. If the players or teams don’t want to be professional, then it’s their own choice. Maybe they don’t want the e-fame, or maybe they just don’t care, or feel like trollin’, but then they won’t get their games casted in the future, and it’s their loss.
Make a rule saying; Want your game casted? no fake nicking allowed.
Problem solved
- # - nice! +1The TF2 community and rules don’t go together very well, this is both a good and a bad thing, so I’m not complaining.
Can you imagine us cancelling a great cast because of a fake nicker?
- # - nice! +1Red Monster, Gold Monster, Yellow Monster, Lime Monster, Blue Monster etc
- # - nice! +4And those were the names we would assume would be mentioned in a cast. It’s the theme of the team!
- # - nice! +1Well I’m a viewer but thanks for telling me what I like to see, now I know.
- # - nice! +3My name is now WAR_HUR_YEAH
- # - nice! +2mvp is too good for this game
- # - nice! +0I’m on the bench this season watching all the games and from a spectators pov it’s been great so far, superb coverage from vanilla with good articles and casts.
Keep up the good work!
- # - nice! +7I’d really like to see this fake-nicking thing put to bed. The below is pasted direct from ETF2L.
“1.10.2 Premiership players need to use their real nicknames
All players who play a match in the premiership division must submit their nickname to the admin staff before they are eligible to play. Players may only play with their “official” nickname, letter by letter. Team tags and sponsorship additions are allowed. If a team uses a player who did not submit his nickname or uses a different nickname the team gets a minor warning per player. This rule may be enforced even without explicit reports from the opposing team.”
If we’re gonna get regular casts of Div1 games, something I’m really in favour of – then I’d love to see this rule applied there also.
The VTV audiences, casters and community in general deserve the casts to be of the highest quality they can, and having one or two people who see themselves as more important by not sticking with the spirit of the game, should be punished in some way. I’ve no doubt plenty of people will say I’m creating a storm in a teacup – but it is really annoying when guys like Arx and Beta have to scramble their words to explain to us that redz/reko/whoever it was last night had changed their name to John Rambo Extreme Weeaboo Champion and keep fumbling over it for the duration of the cast, it just makes the whole affair seem amateur.
- # - nice! +4Ultimately, I want to see it applied it to the whole league, i.e. by forcing everyone to use his ETF2L nick but only allowing 1 nick name change per 3/4/5 months. This requires code changes but we are very confident that our new coders can apply these changes in the very near future.
- # - nice! +2Getting all these nicknames was a hassle for 8 teams already, I do not want to imagine how it would have been for 16 or more (and what an upset even more warnings would have caused).
Personally, I find John Rambo Extreme Weeaboo Champion being a better nick than reko/HiTmAn/Forsak3n/that guy with 4 ‘z’ in his nick.
I think TF2 in its development has come to the point where we need to gather a commission and decide which nicks are more suitable for casting because it is obvious that some aliases of anonymous persons on the Internet are better than others. Pretty sure it must be a certain combination of vowels and consonants, now we just need to find this out.
Also, I did apologize before Arx after watching VODs and he said he didn’t mind it.
- # - nice! +3He did come and say sorry, and yes, I said I don’t mind, because I don’t mind :)
I’m sure reko would be the one who would be annoyed if he pulled off some amazing 6 man fragging spree, had an awesome moment of commentating, and wanted to use it in a frag movie, but the commentary refers to a different name.
- # - nice! +0Sorry to single you out, just a symptom of an ongoing problem really.
I really don’t get your facetious insinuation that we should decide what people’s nicknames are, I cannot think of a single person in prem/div1 that a caster would take umbrage with if they used their correct nickname.
I respect the fact that Arx didn’t mind it, however as I alluded to in another post, the overall quality of the cast did suffer when the casters fumbled on a few occasions when trying to call out your plays.
- # - nice! +3I have no problem with players using a fake nick. It’s only a computer game after-all, they can use whatever name they want to use. I’m just saying, not to expect us as casters to tell the viewers who you really are. If you want them to know, then use your real alias, as that is what we will refer to in the cast.
If your name is too confusing, too hard to pronounce, or rude, we will probably just refer to a single letter, or even your class for the duration of the cast. There might be a few exceptions, for example, Stephan and Shocky are both frequently used aliases by the same person, and as the player is well known, we might refer to them as either of them, but that is a casting choice, and shouldn’t be expected.
- # - nice! +1Badass reko, ruined the cast
- # - nice! +3Ruined the cast? Nope.
Contributed to a decrease in the overall quality of the cast? Yup.
- # - nice! +5He’s still a badass.
- # - nice! +2Yeah, changing your name in a video game.
That’s some Al Capone shit right there.
