These two teams both certainly have all-star rosters. Tonight’s field will be bursting with talent: the pure deathmatching skills of all players involved, coupled with perfectly-timed ubers and
Mirelin’s famous houdini-esque dodging skills will surely make this the most exciting game of the season, and show why this game is so anticipated.
Following Chaplain’s article (published just earlier!) let’s take a closer look at some stats and analysis from previous games, along with my predictions…
The rosters:
Epsilon eSports
Medic –
KnoxXx
Demoman –
numlocked
Soldiers –
Mike and
Mitsy
Scouts –
stefan and
basH
As I’ve said in many an article, this is a roster to be feared. Ruthless German scout combo stefan and basH can wipe out the entire enemy team in seconds, and Mitsy and Mike clock up massive damage numbers on a regular basis. KnoxXx the master tactician will be on top form, as this game may require the utmost concentration from Epsilon in order to achieve victory, and numlocked will be keen to show old-timer ryb that he’s vastly improved since the days of Dignitas’ dominance. However, as a recent log file has shown (linked just above!), Epsilon drew against Crack Clan in a PCW on Monday, despite Crack Clan having to rely on the skills of Captainhax as a merc forminimoose, and lost 3 rounds to Quarantine in their Week 3 game: could this be the time for them to fall from their mighty perch?!
broder
Medic –
Mirelin
Demoman -
ryb
Soldiers –
Zebbosai and
jukebox
Scouts –
bybben and
cookye
Well, what can I say? Epsilon’s roster looks impressive, but broder’s lineup is the stuff of myth and legend. They have won both games comfortably so far this season, beating Team Doctrinal and PyRo|GEN 7-2, 5-0 amd 7-2, 5-1 respectively. Speaking of legends, superstar Swedes (not the turnip kind) ryb and bybben, otherwise known as ‘Rybben‘ from their heyday in Team Dignitas, are featured in this stunning lineup. Ryb’s critics may note that he is often outdamaged by the majority of his team, but when I’ve watched him play he deals crucial damage in the right places at the right times, allowing his team to clean up after him. Zebbosai, on the other hand, has been having a fantastic run all-round so far in broder. He dishes out consistently high damage numbers and is clearly credit to team! Add to this the scout that never misses, cookye, and the super soldier/sniper jukebox, and Epsilon should be worried!
The predictions:
The maps for tonight’s game are Badlands and Snakewater. My prediction is that broder will take an early lead on Badlands, and then Epsilon, in true Epsilon style, will step it up a GeaR (groan) and take back some rounds. All in all though, I think broder will just hang on for the victory. On Snakewater, I’m predicting a much closer game, eventually ending in a Golden Cap in broder’s favour.
Will I be correct?! To find out (and then mock me when Epsilon roll those noobs in 20 minutes), tune into VanillaTV tonight from 21:10 cet – casters to be announced.

- # - nice! +1k
- # - nice! +0Didn’t expect Broder to winn this. The only way Epsilon is truly going to be challenged is when some prem team(s) stays together for more then 2 seasons or at least a long time and that’s quit rare. Broder is just too new, I think. They have the potential, but will need months of playing time together. Epsilon is just too well organised to be beaten by anyone at this moment.
- # - nice! +3I would tend to agree, however Mitsy and basH have just arrived in the team, and it took alot of adjustements in our playstyle.
Mike who was previously playing pocket with GeaR roaming, was moved to roaming, and it took some time for both Mitsy and Mike to work together. However the fact Knoxxx knows Mitsy’s capabilities and playstyle has allowed Epsilon to quickly adapt. basH and stefan having previously worked together in Buttonbashers, didnt take long before the chemistry operated. But again wltrs calls, and sniping abilities made us adapt our playstyle, and we couldnt depend on wltrs going in bot mode for officials.
I am certain that the epsi players felt rejuvenated before the game when people doubted their capability to once again win, and i can tell you that before going ingame vs broder, they were very hyped up and just wanted to wipe the floor with the opponent. They played a sensational game. It was the first game in a long time where they had something to proove again.
broder did miss Tek, not saying it would have changed the whole game, but Tek is a great soldier. Also not wanting to pcw Epsilon ever, in hopes of not showing tacs was a mistake. and Scene is also too small of prem teams to be doing that….
Last, i think pcws should be no indication as to anything, especially with a teams who have been around so long, do you honestly think they put in as much effort in a pcw then a new team that are trying to build in momentum and confidence. Again take the wltrs pcw mode and wltrs official cheat on mode as an idea.
Kaidus you are most likely purposely underestimating BFF abilities, on the right day, you could win the prem season, the players are there, just a matter of a on and off day. I will be excited to see the next games BFF vs Epsi or BFF vs broder. I don’t think broder had an off day when you beat them, you just had an ON day which is rare yes :)
Exciting season ahead, and playoffs will be amazing. Thanks for vanilla , arx & beta, djc for all the efforts you do, this is why i enjoy the TF2 community the most and Epsilon will continue to support TF2.
You sound like a soccermom on a playing field.
but im also their waterboy!
Oh I am aware that Mitsy is new to Epsi (at least in officials) and basH too. But the team chemistry was already there. You can see by the way Epsilon plays, they know each other well.
I would love to write an article about the esport psychology, since I feel it’s a underrated subject in esports in general. The team chemistry plays a massive part in how teams perform against each other and also translates into better/worse individual performances.
When I look at Epsi, I cant help it feel, I see friends playing, that enjoy each others compagny, in mutual trust. Which brings their teamplay to whole other level. Something Broder or BFF are lacking, because they are newly formed teams with players, that have switched teams alot. When Epsilon switches to 5th gear, the rest stays stuck in 2nd gear. I don’t think that any of the prem teams can pose a threat to Epsilon at this moment because of that, eventhough I really would like to see that happen for the sake of exitement in prem. But correct me if I’m wrong :)
- # - nice! +1I wonder, when you say “You can see by the way Epsilon plays, they know each other well.”
- # - nice! +1where can you see that exactly? because when the combo push the flanks also push? because when one guy is bombing the other guy is bombing as well? it has nothing to do with chemistry or whatever you call it, even if epsilon were a new team and broder were the ones being 2 seasons together, the scores would’ve still be the same because epsilon has better players. ( maybe not exactly the same, I’d give the benefit of the doubt to broder saying they could’ve won maybe 1 more round )
Hmm, I don’t know if Epsilon has the better players, I’ll take your word for that, since you are the better judge in that then me. But that doesn’t really matter for the point I was trying to make. Broder lost 1-6, 0-5 and I don’t think Broder is that much worse in dm , do you?
- # - nice! +1I was more referring to the peace and calmness Epsilon is always showing in their matches. There is never a moment of panic in their play and they seldom act out of sync with each other. I don’t think thats merely timing/game-sense, because everyone in prem has a good game-sense and timing (in general). My theory, is that they know exactly what to expect from each other, because they know each other well. And thus they have a slight advantage over any team.
The one that turns up the most in an official is Knoxxx in terms of communication/strats. As Darn pointed out somewhere, even if both teams are evenly dm skills, Knoxxx grasps the general flow/gameplay like hes playing some RTS game. Just ask Shin :D
Peace and calmness??? Have you heard me on our comms???
- # - nice! +1From my understanding, they’ve had no policy against PCWing against epsilon, they’ve booked but gotten cancelled.
- # - nice! +1What do you know, you’re just a mascot!
;D
- # - nice! +2they booked one PCW with us which we cancelled, since then they didn’t want to play us until after the official.
- # - nice! +5“Broder is just too new, I think. They have the potential”
- # - nice! +7no, they don’t
i hope it was a strat of broder to lose now against epsi
cu in playoff shitpsilon
- # - nice! +7Woosh!
Looked a lot like EU vs NA this Summer. Both build up and actual game, 1 team at the peak and another caught like a deer in the headlights.
Good for prospectives of the first interesting grand final in years? Probably not.
But then, I’d say it’s a good portion of healthy to get the pressure off what is actually a new form. And one can’t do anything but take their hat off to the epsiboys for showing how the game could be played, at a standard even smug yanks could be impressed by.
Well played.
- # - nice! +4it was a wild ride
- # - nice! +7I really enjoyed the vanilla cast, thought Pledge and Admirable again proved to be a good combo.
it was a shame that the match didn’t live up to expectation, I think it was a bit of nostalgia that made me think broder were in with a shout, probably the same case for a lot of people. I’m sure teK would have made a positive impact and could have pulled out some clutch plays, but it could never have affected the result. Cookye and Zebbo do seem to have been carrying from looking at recent pcw’s (I know – stats lol, pcw’s lol) but they had no answer to Epsilon’s sudden aggression and ruthless focus/co-ordinated firepower.
Epsilon’s ability to just flick a switch and ‘turn it on’ as it were was something to behold, very reminiscent of watching mix^ at i46. Able to capitalise on the slightest advantage, not necessarily a pick, on occasion just something as simple as a distraction or a pressured demoman, was enough to see broder down 4 players in a heartbeat.
I think Mike deserves some individual praise too, he combined the dynamism of harbleu with the deathmatching and damage output of TLR. ANY aspiring gunboats roamers should dig out the STVs and learn.
I just hope Epsilon keep this sort of momentum going forward to i49 so we can stick one on the yanks after the disappointment of last year.
Slick – you must have watched that match with pretty much a permanent smile :D
Probably the worst analysis of the game Trane. Broder probably have the best dm capability in EU but when they are faced almost equal level of skills. This happens. Against all the other teams they have just been brute forcing the rounds. Now that they faced epsilon who combined shooting with some proper meta of TF2, broder lost in mere seconds. I hope Broder watch the VODs and think again if rushing forward and putting yourself in a fight where they are in a disadvantage is the right choice after all. Good examples are when they get one pick on cp1 and decide to rocketjump and run through chokepoints while taking heavy damage, when epsilon just slowly spam and fall backwards till they got their respawn and crushed the aggression with superior heals/ammo. Aggression is good but without an overall plan and having it all over the map without any sort of focus, left Mirelin vulnerable more than on one occasion.
The rounds where Epsilon crushed Broder on midfights were just because of Broders inability to give up the point when the fight is not clearly in their favor anymore. Furthermore when they lost mirelin on mids, the call to go instantly for Knoxx was made and since this is a rather ABC-play epsilon were prepared for it and got a clean and most importantly fast wipe. Wipe being fast meant that Epsilon had time to cap cp2 and walk close to cp1 with full uber advantage before the spawns came in. The few rounds where Broder had couple players left they decided to go for the herosuicide on Knoxx on CP2 when the point was already almost capped. Even if they forced the uber they had to defend CP1 with 4 or less players.
Now when Broder won the middlefights, on most of them Epsilon were able to fall back. Broder still kept the desperate aggressive chase doing the same mistake over and over again, taking damage and running into respawns, leaving mirelin open for flanks etc. Basically they walked into a perfect counter-attack trap.
Epsilon simply won because of Broder overextending and not giving up on midfights. They basically played like you do against a lower div team when you are bored +w+w+w+w+w+w.
Even fucking quarantine gave Epsilon a proper fight on Snakewater who are not on the same dm level as Broder, but atleast they did some plays right which gave them the opportunity to go into a fight with an actual advantage.
If Broder dont sit down and think thru the massive amount of mistakes they did, I dont see them beating Crack-Clan or BFF, since both of the teams are capable of punishing Broder from overextending. Yes, even BFF, sometimes.
Then again, if they acknownledge this tl:dr rant I did and work on their metagame. I still think they are capable of winning S14.
Analysing games in Finglish since now.
Best Regards
Rauli “Darn” Savela
It wasn’t an analysis at all, just some observations. Thanks for replying to me specifically with your analysis, though.
- # - nice! +0best vtf2 comment in ages
please do more Darnalysis in the future!
with voiceovers
- # - nice! +6I agree Darn. I think I mentioned it in the streamchat: Broder just out-dmed the teams they were playing up until now, but Epsilon also has that kind of DM AND the tactical play to put a hold to the DM fest. They were just hitting a brick wall while overextending like crazy.
- # - nice! +2So basically we only won cause broder played bad? I know i’m in epsilon but i have to disagree (I honestly think that you say they have better dm just cause of rybben) and if you think qn gave us a proper fight, you’re an idiot.
DONT DISAGREE I KILL YOU FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU?!!11111111111
They played incredibly sloppy yes. I’ve seen div3 teams play more organised than what broder showed last night.
- # - nice! +2Our calls were just a lot better than usual (motivation was extremely high). I will upload my POVs with mumble-record soon, so you can listen to it :p

i really like that u are uploading stuff , but what do the viewers gain from a 5:0 rapegame? (its not like there were any up and downs at all)
- # - nice! +1Why is your unicorn trippin’ on acid sam?
- # - nice! +7epsi known no other type of games
- # - nice! +5yeah stefan can you please play worse so we can see a longer game
- # - nice! +2I don’t remember killing myself trane? ;)
- # - nice! +2The game was great to watch throughout, despite it not living up to what I was expecting (hoping for?).
The entire Epsilon team played amazingly well, but I’ve gotta individually mention Mike, numlocked and schocky.
Mike, if anything, seems to have gotten better during his time in Epsilon and had several clutch plays throughout the game.
numlocked was literally insane, cementing his reputation as one of, if not the, best demos in Europe right now, with several multi kills.
schocky is one of the best European scouts, and always has been, and given the performance last night, I can’t see that changing anytime soon.
As I said on chat last night, it seems Epsilon can do no wrong, even when switching players around and/or replacing roles. If the Americans come over to i49 this year, then I think they’ll find a little more resistance compared to last year!

- # - nice! +1Love Darn’s comment tbh.
You either try to beat the best, or become the best.
If you want to beat them, full on aggression, short fights, a bit of lady luck can win you games, and occasionally the rare title. It turns it into more of a lottery, and lower skilled teams have a greater chance of winning those. But if you want to consistently be and become the best, you have to rely on a whole new level of team play and understanding, combined with having some of the best individual players in the game.
No team is willing to put the effort in over here in Europe, while out in the US you have 4 Epsilon standard teams. I don’t even mean sitting down, going through tactics.. it’s just, staying together for a while, actively working on a few things, rather than believing that kicking a player out of your lineup and grabbing one of equal skill is suddenly going to make you compete for the top spot.
To put it into perspective, I don’t think you could breakup all of the other teams in Europe, and put together a dream-team that could compete with Epsilon after just a couple of months.
I´m sorry my friend but we are doing exactly this. When we were looking for a demoman about 1.5month ago we had our hands one some really good and experienced old fellas that asked us to kick certain parts of the team for potencial upgrades etc. So we decided to stick with what we had and go for a little keeno called Brego. We are constantly watching the demos of Epsi against cc. We learn something every pcw we play against them and it may take another 1-2 seasons but we are definitly aiming for something else than becoming 2nd. I agree with you that it takes consistency to become better and you cant just fill up a roster with 5 dm players and try to beat the best team in europe. Consistency in our premiership would also mean that it would make way more sense for some companies to invest money in TF2. Our current state is a “Ring Around the Rosie” every season with changing rosters and teams dropping. I hope the teams that formed this seasos and are playing prem atm are sticking together / im looking at you PyroGen. Just my 5cents.
and hat
- # - nice! +1Sticking together is just bs. If only Broder would have played like any other prem team the score would have been drastically different. Would they have won, dont know but anyways.. Team either clicks or not, no amount of practice is not going to change that.
- # - nice! +7I think your bias is shining through pretty brightly now Darn, give it a rest.
- # - nice! +6Was not pointed towards broder really, just an overall observation conserning the fact that if you just stick together long enough you will make it and my opinion of it not being true.
- # - nice! +3one of the few times I agree with you, well said.
- # - nice! +3Who said “if you stick together long enough you make it?”
- # - nice! +1“im looking at you PyroGen.”
- # - nice! +0Man, you just put too much pressure on them saying that!
We’re not the only keen team in eu :P cc are very determined and i think bff are becoming like that too
- # - nice! +6BFF were always keen, but we were also shit so the two tended to balance out.
wtf
- # - nice! +4ur one cheeky cunt mate, talking out of your ass like that
“No team is willing to put the effort in over here in Europe, while out in the US you have 4 Epsilon standard teams”
Thats why BP is 13-0 and has won 51 rounds and lost 10? Because there are 4 “epsilon standard teams”. BP is running away with ESEA this year, they’ve played Mixup twice and beaten them comfortably twice. Of course that may change on LAN but right now BP is running away with it all. and there is a big gulf in dm and especially gamesense after BP and mix^.
what u on bout bro??
